Surgical Orthodontics

Forest Park Orthodontics offers truly complete care.

For adults who are suffering from problems with their bite, surgical orthodontics may be necessary to straighten the jaw. Jaw irregularities can cause issues with the bite, and it won’t be enough in these cases to simply use orthodontic braces to make the needed changes. Instead, orthodontic braces are used in conjunction with surgical orthodontics to correct problems with the jaw, leading to a more pleasing facial shape and a more functional smile. Because he’s always on the leading edge of orthodontic treatments, our orthodontists offer surgical orthodontics along with Damon braces, Incognito invisible braces, and Invisalign clear braces.

The Process

You will first wear orthodontic braces for between 6 and 18 months before undergoing surgical orthodontics. It may seem like these orthodontic braces are making your bite worse, but don’t worry — we’re simply moving your teeth so that they will be in the right position after surgery. The surgical orthodontics will correct these problems when the entire process is completed.

Once the first phase is completed, you will visit a hospital and have Orthognathic surgery performed by an oral surgeon. This surgery can involve moving the upper jaw or lower jaw, separating the jaws, or adding bone to the jaw. At the time of the surgical orthodontics, the surgeon may also adjust other small bones in the area that can affect your bite. This process can take a few hours depending on the changes that need to be made, and we recommend a two week healing period afterwards before you return to your normal routine.

Who is a candidate?

Surgical orthodontics isn’t recommended for children or teens. Instead, adults whose jaws are finished growing can undergo this process when necessary. The pre-surgical part of the service can begin before the jaw is done growing, setting up the scene for oral surgery when the time comes. Candidates for surgical orthodontics are patients whose jaws are part of the problem with their bites. If your bite is causing you to be unhappy with your facial appearance, you might want to consider surgical orthodontics.
